Today I had a doctor’s appointment and I had to move up my appointment last minute. I called the office and they told me to just come in they would squeeze me in. When I got to the waiting room, I spent most of my time just cleaning out my 20,000 plus emails off my phone, my back the receptionist. I wasn’t paying attention, but something drew me to this patient that walked in the door. It was an older man with his daughter, a younger woman. The younger women had an ice pack on her shoulder. I then opened my nosy ears and listened to what she was saying to the receptionist. She was telling the receptionist that she just had surgery and had a port put in. This moment felt like someone kicked me in the stomach as it triggered so much emotion and memories of Ellie’s port. I talked myself down from an outright panic attack.
Well what gets more interesting is what happened next. I was called back to another waiting room for Bloodwork. The normal phlebotomist was not there so there was a little backup. The young lady then was sitting in the small waiting room with me. I was drawn to strike up a conversation. I know what you are all thinking, nah not Kyle, she would never talk to a stranger. Sarcasm in the tone of course. I said the young lady, “I’m sorry but I overheard you had a port put in today, you are going to love having a port it makes blood draws so much easier.” She then went on to tell me she was an Oncology nurse and knew all about ports. Well the coincidences did not stop there. Then she asked me why my daughter had a port. I then went into a brief description of Ellie having Chemotherapy. The young lady then told me that she had cancer also and had to begin Chemotherapy soon. For some reason talking to this young lady brought me so much peace almost as if I was supposed to be in this place at this time just to speak with her. So, she asked me questions about Ellie, you know the basics how long was she on Chemo, how she is doing today. I then told her I lost Ellie in April. She was so compassionate and said a heart felt sorry. You think this is all crazy well she pulls her headband back and tells me she has a brain tumor that spread, and she had brain surgery two weeks prior.
Now I really am in awe, awe of this moment this moment that would of never happened if I didn’t go into my doctors an hour early, this moment that would of never happened if I didn’t pay attention (or be noisy), This moment that started with taking my breath away to giving me such peace of mind. Almost as if Ellie was in the room with me saying mom talk to this young lady. I was then called back for my blood work. After my bloodwork I stopped back at this young lady and took off my #Elliestrong bracelet that says, “Live on, follow your Dreams” and gave it to her. I explained that while Ellie was fighting that she was asked if she had advice for anyone going through a struggle such as Ellie and she said “Live on, follow your Dreams” I then told her I wished her the best of luck. A few minutes later I walked past the same waiting room to meet with a nurse and she was wearing the bracelet.
This moment, this moment was created by Ellie. I hope I gave her a sense of love and hope in this moment. I am sure I got allot more out of this moment then this young lady did, but man God works in mysterious ways. Had to share this because it just was too good not to share it.
Be kind and talk to someone today, you never know what you might have in common or if you can help one another with just a small conversation.
My sister asked if I got her information so that maybe the foundation could help her and my heart breaks that I did not get her information. I am hoping that the bracelet might draw her somehow to this website and she will reach out to me.
